Case Study 2:
  Title: Containerized Cargo - Fire Damage
  Case 1: A consignment of 3,500 Cartons of DVD Multi System was stuffed into a 40’ general cargo container and hauled from Panyu, mainland China to Hong Kong port for onward shipment to Valencia, Spain by sea. During road transport to Hong Kong S.A.R., the trailer caught fire and all cartons consequently sustained damage.

  Case 2: A shipment of 586 packages of Textile Products was carried by a 40’ container and transported from Shunde to Hong Kong S.A.R., on 21st May, 2003.
When the tractor arrived at Hezhou Section of Guangshen Highway, at about 0400 hours, the driver suddenly saw a cement tanker, without rear lights, which ran ahead of him, so he intended steer to the middle lane of the highway, but it was too late, the tractor then crushed the cement tanker and the tractor, along with the container, caught fire, as a consequence.

  Title: Containerized cargo - insufficient and improper lashing and stowage
  Case 1: A consignment of 1 set of Brand New Potain Self-Erection Crane, comprising 20 packages which were stuffed into an open container and shipped from Fos Sur Mer, France, to Hong Kong by sea. Upon de-stuffing, the Jib was found to be collapsed and laid on a Control Cabin stowed directly underneath.

  Case 2: 16 pieces of Work Roll for Hot Strip Mill, was carried by 4 x 40’ open-top containers and shipped from Busan, South Korea per “AEGEAN EXPRESS” Voyage: 028S and arrived at Hong Kong S.A.R. on 7th December, 2004, for transshipment to the destination, Huangpu New Port, P.R. China.
During trans-loading onto receiving barges, severe damage to the containers was found.

  Title: Containerized cargo - shipped on deck
  Case 1 : A consignment of 1 unit of Container Handler, carried by 3 x 40’ flat-rack containers and shipped from Gothenburg, Sweden to Xiamen, P.R. China transshipped in Hong Kong. Upon arrival, the main unit of Handler, on one of the flat-racks was found to be rusty.

  Title: Containerized cargo (export) - pilferage
  Case 1: A consignment of 57,914 pieces of Mechanical Watch (specially designed for sale to Panama buyers only) were packed in 10 wooden cases and shipped from Hong Kong to Colon Free Zone, Republic of Panama, by sea. Upon arrival and unpacking, a total of 42,602 pieces were found missing.

  Case 2: A shipment of 3,600 dozen of Umbrellas were packed in 720 cartons and stuffed into a 20’ cargo container in Shenzhen, Guangdong, P.R. China. The laden container was drayed to Hong Kong by tractor and exported to Santos, Brazil, by sea. However, on arrival at destination and upon opening of container, all cartons was found containing shredded waste paper instead.

  Case 4: A shipment comprising 12 Pallets of 672 Sets of LCD Monitor was carried by 1 twenty-foot container and shipped from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and arrived Hong Kong S.A.R. On 2nd July, 2003, the container was collected from carrier’s container terminal. Following haulage to Ka Hing Public Car Park, STT No. 1118, Jockey Club Road, Sheung Shui, the container was temporarily stored, pending onward road transport to mainland China. However, the container was allegedly found to be stolen on 3rd July, 2003.

  Case 1: A consignment of 480 bales of Bedsheet was carried by an FCL container and shipped from Shenzhen, P.R. China, via Hong Kong to Colon Free Zone, Republic of Panama by sea. On arrival at destination and upon opening of container, the entire contents were found having sustained water-damage.

  Case 1: Three consignments of Electronic Products, carried by 3 general containers, were temporarily stored in container depots in Lok Ma Chau pending shipment to overseas. However, the depot flooded during heavy rainy weather and the containers on bottom stacks were water-soaked.

  Case 2: A consignment of 3,105 sets of Air-Conditioner was carried by 23 x 40’ general containers and shipped from Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Hong Kong by sea. Upon arrival at Hong Kong, the containers were discharged from vessel without exception and temporarily stored in carriers’ container depot. However, when the Consignee collected the containers later, damage to one of the containers was discovered.

  Case 3: A crane driver was in control of the frontloader and a 40’ container was being shifted from bay, G4-1-4, pending shifting onto a tractor. However, during the container shifting, this container was in collision with an empty container at bay, G8-8-3, then the empty container dropped onto the tractor which consequently sustained damage and the tractor driver was injured.

  Case 4: A container No. EASU 9696418, being part of a shipment of 894 Rolls of BOPP Plain Film, packed in 58 Pallets and carried by 4 x 40’ containers was received from carrier’s terminal on 3rd September, 2003. When the tractor was driven towards the exit, the driver suddenly saw a dog coming out and he rapidly turned to left side. As a result of the sharp turn, the tractor, trailer and container overturned. At the time of incident, the driver was injured and container, tractor and trailer all sustained damage.

  Case 2: On 17th April, 2003, a lot of medicine, drugs and cosmetic goods, was delivered from the warehouse of a logistics company’s warehouse, in Shatin, to local clients at various locations on Hong Kong Island. However, part of the packages allegedly fell out of the truck during a right turn at a roundabout in Wong Chuk Hang and were lost.
