Zennon Cheng completed his secondary education in Hong Kong S.A.R. in 1978 and went on to study in the Officer Training Class of Golden Peak Maritime Agencies Marine School (currently known as Oriental Overseas Container Line), graduating in 1979. He served on board ocean-going vessel S.T. Energy Courage, GRT 104,902, a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) as a Deck Cadet for one and a half years thereafter.
In 1980, he sat the examination for the Licence of Competence at Third Mate grade in Kobe, Japan and was awarded the Licence in December that year. In 1982 and 1984, he was further awarded Licences at Second Mate and Chief Mate grades in Singapore and New York, U.S.A., respectively.
He worked for several years at Golden Peak Maritime Agencies, during which time he served as Third Mate and Second Mate on crude oil tankers and natural petroleum gas carriers. Zennon visited numerous ports throughout the world during this time and had an extensive range of duties, including loading and discharging of cargo, safety equipment and navigational aids maintenance, management of crew members and navigation, etc., becoming fully conversant with all aspects of maritime affairs.
Zennon has undertaken numerous maritime and insurance courses at the Hong Kong Polytechnic and other organizations, and is certificated in the fields of fire fighting, radar observer, radiotelephony, lifeboat man survival at sea and marine insurance, etc.
In 1988, Zennon joined Pierre Leong & Co. (Cargo Survey) Ltd., as Senior Cargo Surveyor. He was appointed as Director in February 1991.
His surveying experience was gained with various insurers, P+I associations, forwarding contractors, and shipping and trading companies.
Zennon has performed numerous marine and cargo surveys, including collision and casualty damage to ocean-going vessels, pleasure craft, barges and cargoes, container inspection and transit damage to cargoes of all varieties, especially machinery, electronic products and steel cargoes.
He also has experience in investigation of carriers’ and public liability claims, and marine cargo transit damage and mysterious losses, and has assessed and settled marine cargo claims and recovery actions on behalf of cargo underwriters.
He acquired a Diploma of Marine and Inland Transit Insurance from the Insurance School (Non-Life) of Japan, and qualified as an Associate of the Australian Insurance Institute (currently known as Australia New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance) in 1994.
He qualified as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 1996, and as a Member on 25th February, 2000 after attending an up-graded course.
Zennon was awarded a Diploma in Marine Surveying (Liquid and Non-Liquid Cargoes) organized by International Institute of Marine Surveyors, The National Sea Training Centre of Kent College and IBC Global Conference Limited in February, 2001. Zennon was also awarded a Diploma in Marine Surveying (Small Craft) in February, 2002.
He studied and awarded a Professional Diploma in Logistics Management in December, 2003 and elected as a Professional Member of the International Transport & Logistics Association.
